The Importance of Vaccination Summer is upon us, and many people are thinking of vaccinating their pets prior to putting them in kennels for a holiday. But vaccination serves a very real purpose other than just allowing entry into boarding kennels. Distemper,Hepatitis and Parvovirus in dogs, although less common now, are still around. As live vaccines these confer good immunity and often don't need to be done more often than every 3 years. Leptospirosis, however, is much more prevalent. It is carried by rats (and it is said you are never more than 10 feet from one of those!) and the vaccine is still of the killed variety which works less well than live vaccine, and so needs to be given annually Feline Parvovirus (Feline Panleukopaenia)has a similar vaccine response to the canine variety, however Feline Herpes and Caliciviruses (Cat 'Flu) and Feline Leukaemia Virus vaccines need to be done annually to maintain immunity We at Midsummer Veterinary Group feel that this protection should start as soon as possible after you bring your new puppy or kitten home, as prevention is always better than cure. Equally important is proper identification of your pet, and as a responsible pet owner, neutering your pet where necessary. To this end we have put together a kitten and puppy package to get your new pet off to the best start possible |
